Position: Submarine Systems Technical Specialist – NUWC Support

Perfect for Sailors Transitioning Out of the Navy (6–12 Years Experience)

Are you separating from the Navy and looking for a career where your submarine experience directly matters? Join our team supporting the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC)—where your fleet knowledge, watchstanding experience, and hands-on technical skills help shape the next generation of undersea warfare systems.

We value the experience you already have. If you were qualified in submarines and served as an FT, NAVET, STS, ANAV, or IT, you are a strong fit for this role.

Why This Role Is a Great Fit for Transitioning Sailors:

  • Your existing technical qualifications directly translate to the work.
  • No need to “start over”—your submarine experience is your strongest asset.
  • Work alongside former sailors, engineers, and NUWC personnel who understand your background.
  • Continue contributing to the fleet without the deployment tempo.
  • Opportunities for growth into engineering, test support, cybersecurity, and systems integration.

Responsibilities:

As a Submarine Systems Technical Specialist, you will help NUWC engineers and fleet customers by providing real-world expertise in:

  • System testing, troubleshooting, and equipment evaluations
  • Supporting modernization and installation activities
  • Assisting with fleet introduction and new system rollouts
  • Running checks, collecting data, and verifying system functionality
  • Providing fleet-perspective feedback to engineering teams
  • Supporting pier-side and at-sea test events (short-duration, no deployments)

Who We’re Looking For (Transitioning Sailors Welcome!)

  • Qualified in Submarines (SS)
  • 6–12 years of Navy service in one of the following ratings:
  • FT – Fire Control Technician
  • NAVET – Navigation Electronics Technician
  • STS – Sonar Technician Submarines
  • ANAV – Assistant Navigator (Navigation Operations)
  • IT – Information Systems Technician
  • Strong troubleshooting, maintenance, and system operation skills
  • Familiarity with shipboard systems, PMS, and technical procedures
  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to maintain a security clearance

How Your Navy Rating Fits Here

FT – Fire Control Technician

Your experience with Combat Control Systems, fire control interfaces, and tactical computing allows you to directly support NUWC testing and development for weapons and control systems.

NAVET – Navigation Electronics Technician

Your background with inertial navigation, VMS, logs, radars, and navigation sensors is essential for supporting NUWC navigation system evaluations and upgrades.

STS – Sonar Technician Submarines

Your sonar operations, acoustic analysis, and sensor maintenance experience make you a key contributor to sonar system testing and undersea warfare development.

ANAV – Assistant Navigator

Your charting, navigation planning, and safety experience is invaluable for validating navigation procedures, documentation, and integration of navigation products.

IT – Information Systems Technician

Your network administration, cybersecurity awareness, and experience managing submarine LANs and comms systems supports NUWC’s tactical networks and secure comms work.

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience working with NAVSEA, NUWC, NIWC, IWS, or shipyards
  • Security+, Network+, or other DoD 8570 certifications (especially for ITs)
  • OEM, fleet introduction, or advanced equipment training

What You Gain

  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Predictable schedule—no duty sections, no deployments
  • Clear advancement into engineering technician, system integrator, or cybersecurity pathways
  • A team environment with many fellow former submariners
